The first hour of trust

The first hour after a homeowner calls you is when the relationship is actually decided.

An essay by Dustin Michael Drozd

Almost everything a homeowner needs to know about whether they can trust a contractor is communicated in the first hour: whether the phone was answered, whether the call was returned, whether the next step was clearly described.

Most contractors lose the relationship in this window without realizing it, because the customer is too polite to say why they went elsewhere.

Treating the first hour as operationally sacred — staffed, scripted, measured — is one of the highest-leverage decisions a small services business can make.

It is rarely the glamorous part of the work. It is almost always the part that decides whether the rest of the work happens.
