A Texas upbringing.

Before the businesses, before the loss, before the company — there was a flat stretch of Texas south of Houston where most of the formative work of a life quietly happened outside.

Dustin Michael Drozd was born in Clear Lake, Texas, on the Gulf Coast side of greater Houston, and the family settled in Pearland not long after. From about age five through eighteen he lived in essentially the same place — same streets, same neighbors, same small set of routines. That kind of continuity, in an era when most American childhoods are interrupted by relocations, is undervalued. It was a hands-on environment. Tools were nearby. Vehicles got fixed in the driveway. If something broke, somebody figured it out — usually after dinner, usually with a borrowed manual, usually with a kid handing wrenches and learning the names of parts by hearing them said out loud.

Nobody framed any of this as an apprenticeship. It was simply how a household ran. The assumption you absorb early, in a house like that, is that you can probably learn whatever the situation requires. You may not be able to do it yet, but the gap between the current self and the version that can do it is closeable with attention and time. That assumption, more than any specific skill, is the inheritance.

The cadence of work was also visible. Adults left for jobs and came home tired. They did not complain about it in a way that suggested the alternative was sitting still. Work was simply what filled the productive hours of a day. The fact of it was not contested. The standards within it were.

03 · Outdoors

The land as a quiet teacher.

The Texas Gulf Coast does not let you ignore weather. Hurricanes arrive on schedule. Thunderstorms build for an hour and break in ten minutes. Heat is a structural fact of life from May to October. A child raised in that climate develops, without trying, a working respect for weather that other parts of the country file under abstraction.

What the years in Pearland left behind was not a set of opinions. It was a set of defaults. A default toward work. A default toward making rather than waiting. A default toward the assumption that small daily standards add up to something visible over a long enough timeline. A default toward weather as a force to be respected rather than fought.

Those defaults survived everything that came next — the early jobs, the early businesses, the deaths of both parents, the decades of building crews and companies.
