Why curiosity matters more than confidence

Confidence repeats what it already knows. Curiosity finds the part of the room that nobody has explored yet.

Confidence is useful, but it has an expiration date. The world keeps revising itself, and the leader who only knows what they already knew will eventually be running yesterday's playbook against tomorrow's problem.

Curiosity is the antidote, but only when treated as a daily practice. It is not a personality trait. It is a posture — the willingness to walk into a familiar room and ask one honest question you did not ask the last time you were there.

In a trade like roofing, curiosity shows up in small forms. A different fastener. A new underlayment. The way a homeowner explains a leak. The pattern of a hailstorm. Each is a small door, and most professionals walk past most of them.

The compounding effect over a decade is the difference between a competent operator and a real craftsman. The craftsman is not smarter at the start. They are simply more curious for longer.
